Top 10 Reasons to Utilize Pegboard in Your Home Garage

by Ben Jacobs

Pegboard can help you use your garage more effectively. It's an ideal garage storage solution for medium to small items that are found among clutter. garage organization can be a daunting task, but using pegboard can simplify much of it. The following list highlights some of the best reasons to utilize pegboard in your garage.

10. Anti-Clutter

Neighborhoods these days are full of garages which are full of clutter. So full, that the vehicles get parked in the driveway. The mere thought of dealing with clutter can be overwhelming itself. Pegboard's certainly not the answer for every problem, but it will help deal with garage clutter by getting things off the floor and onto the wall.

9. Easy to Install

Without drywall, just level it and fasten it to wall studs with wood screws.
With drywall, leave at least a half-inch space between the pegboard and the wall so the hooks can fit through. There are two common ways to do this. The first one uses 1x4's to make a frame. They get fastened to wall studs, and then the pegboard gets fastened to them. The other one uses plastic spacers or washers that slide over the screw right before it gets fastened to the stud.

8. Easy to Use

There's really nothing to it. First add some accessories like hooks, bins, baskets and brackets. Then just fill them all up. It's also a good idea to add locking clips to the hooks so they don't come off while removing things. These can be purchased anywhere that sells pegboard, and most home improvement centers include them with a pack of assorted hooks.

7. Versatility

Pegboard used in a home garage has all kinds of possibilities. You can use hooks, bins, baskets, and brackets with shelves to store things. You can store things like tools, hardware, hobby parts, sports equipment, books, jackets, hats, and gloves. The versatility of pegboard is really only limited by you.

6. Accessibility

In any garage, having things within reach makes it more convenient to use them. pegboard makes things easy to get, and easy to put away.

5. Fast

Another great feature of garage pegboard is that it only takes a few seconds to hang or remove something from it, and you won't have to spend any time wondering where to put things when you're finished with them.

4. Change

One of the best things about garage pegboard is its ability to easily adjust to changing needs. By moving around a few of the hooks, or adding new brackets and shelves, pegboard is always ready to meet the demands of inevitable change.

3. Organization

Everything hanging from pegboard has its own unique place. Although this is such a simple concept, the results speak for themselves. Being organized is important…especially when you're in a hurry.

2. Money

Pegboard isn't exactly the most attractive garage storage solution you can use (although a little paint really helps). However, compared to the cost of garage wall and storage systems, it's by far the least expensive.

1. Fun

No, it's not as fun as a day at the beach, but you can be as creative as you like with it. You might only use one small piece, or you might use it to cover all the walls in your garage. With just a little imagination, you can come up with all kinds of ways to store things on pegboard in your garage.

And a note from Natalie --- Once you've hung your tools on the pegboard in the most organized way, take a brightly coloured marker and draw around each one on the pegboard itself. Then, when you take the hammer and the saw and a few other tools off to use all at once, you can see by the outline exactly where to put them back so that your garage STAYS organized and clutter-free!
